James Arthur opens up about suffering a scary anxiety attack on stage: “I thought I was gunna die”

Singer James Arthur has revealed he suffered an anxiety attack on stage this week, admitting he thought he was going to die.

The ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ singer posted on Twitter to open-up about his experience at the Monte Verde Festival last night (August 10), calling it the “scariest thing ever”.

“I had an anxiety attack on stage in front of 12,000 people tonight and no one would’ve known but I thought I was gunna die on stage,” he wrote.

“Which is maybe the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life but it really made me appreciate my blessings, thanks everyone for everything x”.

The singer received praise from fans for speaking honestly about mental health issues.

Arthur has spoken about mental health struggles in the past, calling the three-year period before his comeback “a bit of a prison sentence”.

“Suffering from all kinds of mental health issues, wondering whether or not I’d come back and make any kind of a splash. I just wanted to make something honest,” he said.

“As long as I made something honest, hopefully it was going to connect, and apparently it has.”

He also recently admitted he was “baffled” by the music industry’s attitude towards the topic, telling the BBC last year: “In sport, they have sports psychologists to get these people ready for the big games and big crowds, and getting scrutinised by the newspapers.

“Whereas in the music business you don’t really have a lot people keeping your head right. They seem happy to see people suffering. It’s mad.”
