Michael Jackson was one of most prominent figures in music. Dubbed the King of Pop he became one of the most popular entertainers in the world, and was the best-selling music artist in the year of his death.
His chart topping career began in 1964 when he and his brothers formed the Jackson 5.
Michael Jackson went on to deliver hit after hit, but his personal life wasn’t without controversy. Here are some of the pivotal moments – and facts in his life to mark his birthday.
Michael Jackson made his professional debut in 1964 – with his older brothers in Jackson 5. He was the eighth of ten children in the Jackson family, a working-class African-American family living in a two-bedroom house on Jackson Street in Gary. Michael Jackson’s album Bad spawned the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, and Dirty Diana. It became the first album to have five number-one singles in the nation.

The 80s were a time of controversy for Jackson thanks to his changing physical appearance, his relationships and behaviour. In 1993 there was a child sexual abuse scandal when a family friend accused him of abusing his son. The case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. His career rumbled on though. Jackson performed at the Super Bowl XXVII Halftime show at the Rose Bowl on January 31, 1993 in Pasadena, California.

Michael Jackson performs in 1995. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Dance Hall of Fame as the only dancer from pop and rock music.
